Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS)
SUDS is the term used for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems, and looks at methods of dealing with surface water in a sustainable manner. Surface water run off from roofs and driveways being returned back into the ground as would naturally occur if the constructed surfaces didn't exist. Traditionally in a town environment surface water has been collected and discharged into a local watercourse. This causes problems as the water is collected and channeled it rapidly increases the speed at which the water would naturally find its way back into the water course and it is a massive volume of water which is returned to the rivers and water courses and has been proven to cause flooding. New driveway applications and resurfacing in urban environments must make allowances to deal with the surface water that they produce. Resin bound, permeable brick paving, gravel driveways and some tarmac surfaces are all permeable and satisfy SUDS regulations.
